ID and Cash Limits for Buying Silver in Thailand

Thailand's anti-money-laundering duties for shops cover businesses trading in gems, gold, and jewellery set with gems or gold, which must report cash of 2 million baht or more to the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO). Silver isn't named, so whether a silver purchase or sale is reportable isn't stated. There is no legal cap on paying cash for silver; the Bank of Thailand's planned cash cap is for gold bars.

The rules in detail

  • Section 16 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act B.E. 2542 (1999) lists 'ผู้ประกอบอาชีพค้าอัญมณีเพชรพลอย ทองคำหรือเครื่องประดับที่ประดับด้วยอัญมณีเพชรพลอยหรือทองคำ': dealers in gems, gold, or jewellery set with gems or gold. Silver isn't mentioned, so a shop selling only silver may fall outside, while silver jewellery set with gems may be inside.
  • Under the 2011 ministerial regulation, these businesses must report cash transactions of 2 million baht or more to AMLO. AMLO also required them to register and file risk-assessment information from June 2024.
  • In January 2026 the Prime Minister directed AMLO to tighten gold reporting and consider lowering the 2 million baht threshold. Any change needs Cabinet approval, and no new rule had been reported as of October 2026.
  • The Bank of Thailand's draft cash cap (consultation 22 July – 20 August 2026) covers gold bars bought and sold at shop counters. It doesn't name silver.

When you sell

  • No rule was found that sets an ID or reporting amount for selling silver to a shop.
  • Expect a shop that also deals in gold or gems to apply its own AML checks to large cash deals.

Gold and travel

  • Gold deals of 2 million baht or more in cash are reported to AMLO, and the BOT's planned cash cap and online-platform limits apply to gold.
  • Foreign currency over US$15,000 must be declared to Customs at the border.

Do I need ID to buy silver in Thailand?

Does a Thai shop report silver purchases to AMLO?

Unclear. Gem, gold and gold-jewellery businesses report cash of 2 million baht or more, but silver isn't named in the law, and any suspicious deal can still be reported.
