ID and Cash Limits for Buying Silver in Indonesia

Indonesian precious-metal dealers, silver included, must report to PPATK, the financial intelligence unit, any customer transaction worth Rp500 million or more, in one go or added up over one day, however you pay. There is no legal cap on cash: a bill to limit cash payments to Rp100 million has been proposed for years but isn't law.

The rules in detail

  • Under the anti-money laundering law (Law 8 of 2010), dealers in gems, jewellery and precious metals (logam mulia) are 'other goods and services providers' that report to PPATK. Precious-metal dealers are covered in general, so silver is included.
  • PPATK Regulation 2 of 2021 (goAML reporting) requires them to report any transaction by a customer in rupiah or foreign currency worth Rp500 million or more, including deals that add up to that in one day. The report is due within 14 working days; suspicious transactions are due within 3 working days, at any amount.
  • PPATK Regulation 7 of 2017 sets the customer checks: an identity document with your NIK, driving licence or passport, a copy of your NPWP card and a specimen signature. The checks apply when a relationship starts, for transactions of Rp100 million or more, when something is suspicious, or when the dealer doubts your details.
  • A bill to restrict cash payments (RUU Pembatasan Transaksi Uang Kartal, with a proposed limit of Rp100 million) has sat on parliament's long-list since 2015 without being passed.

When you sell

  • A sale of Rp500 million or more to a dealer is reported, whether you are paid in cash or by transfer.

Gold

  • Gold falls under the same Rp500 million report. Since 1 August 2025 (PMK 51 and 52 of 2025), a bullion bank buying gold withholds 0.25% income tax above Rp10 million; that rule is for gold, not silver.
Regulation 7 of 2017 lists the Rp100 million trigger alongside professional services (property, money management and company formation), so how it applies to a dealer's ordinary sales isn't spelt out. Treat Rp100 million as the point at which dealers are expected to identify you, not as a firm legal line.
