How silver is priced in Colombia
In Colombia silver is sold per gram as jewellery — usually plata ley 925 — and per ounce or kilo as metal. The figures here are international spot silver converted at today's USD/COP rate: the metal value before IVA, workmanship and the seller's margin.
Banco de la República silver prices
The Banco de la República publishes daily purchase prices for domestically produced precious metals — gold, silver and platinum — calculated from the LBMA silver fixing and the exchange rate. Colombian silver comes mostly as a by-product of gold mining, so volumes are modest and local prices follow the international price.
IVA on silver
The DIAN treats the sale of metals as a taxable sale of goods, with no general IVA exemption for minerals; exported silver qualifies as exempt. Silver jewellery, silverware and bars bought from a business therefore carry the general 19% IVA. Gains on silver held for more than two years are taxed as an occasional gain at 15%.
Buying tips
Look for the 925 stamp ("plata ley 925"), and remember that "baño de plata" pieces are only plated. Ask for the weight and purity on the invoice, and use the calculator above with the 925 setting to see the value of the metal. Metal traders must be registered in RUCOM, the national register kept by the Agencia Nacional de Minería.
