How silver is priced in Poland
In Poland silver is quoted in złoty per ounce for coins, per kilo for bars and per gram for jewellery, which is mostly 925. The figures here are spot silver converted at today's USD/PLN rate — the metal value before 23% VAT and dealer premiums.
VAT and income tax
Poland's VAT exemption for investment gold does not extend to silver: silver bars and new coins carry the standard 23% VAT. Some coins, mainly second-hand ones, are sold under the margin scheme (VAT marża), where VAT is due only on the dealer's margin. For private individuals, selling silver is free of income tax if it takes place more than six months after the end of the month of purchase; earlier sales are taxed at the 12%/32% scale.
Polish silver production
Poland is one of the world's largest silver producers: KGHM Polska Miedź, the state-controlled copper miner, recovers silver as a by-product of its copper mines in Lower Silesia. Polish prices still follow the international dollar price converted into złoty, so a weaker złoty raises local prices.
Old coins and hallmarking
Pre-war Piłsudski coins of 5 zł (11 g) and 10 zł (22 g) are 750 silver and contain 8.25 g and 16.5 g of pure silver. Hallmarking is compulsory in Poland and is done by the state assay offices; legal silver standards are 999, 925, 875, 830 and 800, and silver items under 5 g are exempt.
