How silver is priced in Morocco
Moroccan silver is sold per gram for jewellery — from sterling (925) pieces to traditional Amazigh silverwork — and per kilo for metal. The figures here are international spot silver converted at today's USD/MAD rate: the metal value before the hallmarking fee, VAT, workmanship (façon) and the seller's margin.
A growing silver producer
Morocco is a significant silver miner. According to the Silver Institute's World Silver Survey 2026, Moroccan mines produced about 11.9 million ounces in 2025, up 50% on the year — the largest percentage gain among the main producing countries. Most mine output is exported, so local prices still follow the international silver price and the dirham exchange rate.
Hallmarking and tax
Precious-metal articles, silver as well as gold, are assayed and stamped with the official poinçon at the customs administration's guarantee offices, which also auction seized gold and silver jewellery. Hallmarking declarations are filed online through the customs BADR system. Morocco's standard VAT (TVA) rate is 20%, but much of the jewellery trade is informal; ask for an invoice showing weight, purity and façon.
Traditional silver jewellery
Silver has a long tradition in Amazigh (Berber) jewellery, and towns such as Tiznit are known for silverwork. Older and souk pieces vary widely in fineness — some are well below sterling, others are plated — so the metal value can be much lower than a piece's price. Weigh the piece, check the hallmark and use the calculator above with the right purity to see what the silver itself is worth.
