How silver is priced in Jordan
In Jordan silver is bought mainly as kilo bars for saving and as jewellery and accessories priced by the piece. Unlike gold, silver has no daily trade price from the jewellers' syndicate. The dinar has been pegged to the US dollar (about JD 0.709) since 1995, so the figures here are spot converted to dinars, before sales tax, hallmarking fees, dealer premiums and making charges.
Tax on silver
Gold is on Jordan's list of goods exempt from the 16% general sales tax, with a fixed per-gram hallmarking charge collected instead. Silver is not on that list and does not share gold's arrangement, so silver jewellery, silverware and bars are generally subject to the standard 16% general sales tax as well as JSMO testing and hallmarking fees. Ask whether a quoted price includes sales tax, and get an invoice showing weight, fineness and price.
How silver is sold in Jordan
The head of the jewellers' syndicate said in early 2026 that silver is not classed as precious jewellery in Jordan and is not priced by the syndicate: on most silver jewellery the making charge is worth more than the metal, so it is sold as an accessory. Investment demand goes into kilo bars, which the syndicate does not price either. The flows are large: the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization inspected about 49 tonnes of silver bullion in the first half of 2026, against about 3.5 tonnes of silver jewellery, during a year in which world silver prices passed $100 an ounce for the first time. Compare a dealer's bar price with the live kilo price here and ask for the buy-back price before you buy.
Hallmarks and fineness
Jordan's precious metals law (Law No. 10 of 1975) sets legal silver standards of 1000, 900, 800, 700 and 600 parts per thousand, with minimums for household silverware (900 for trays and cups, 800 for cutlery), and bars the sale of unhallmarked articles; imported pieces can carry a recognised foreign hallmark with official approval. In practice the syndicate says much of the silver on the market carries no hallmark, so check the stamp and ask for the fineness in writing. A 925 piece contains 92.5% silver, so its metal value is 92.5% of the fine-silver price on this page.
