How silver is priced in Italy
In Italy silver is quoted in euros per kilo for bars and per gram for silverware and old silver, much of which is 800 or 925. The figures here are spot silver converted at today's EUR/USD rate — the metal value before 22% VAT and dealer premiums.
VAT on silver
Italy's VAT exemption for oro da investimento applies only to gold. Silver bars and new silver coins carry the standard 22% VAT, so dealer prices sit well above spot; second-hand coins may be sold under the margin scheme, with VAT only on the dealer's margin. The special tax rules for investment gold do not cover silver, so ask a tax adviser how a gain on silver is treated in your case.
Silverware and old silver
Italian silverware (argenteria) has long been made in 800 silver, and jewellery mostly in 925. Pieces carry their fineness and an identification mark — a star, a number and the province code — identifying the maker. When selling old silver, weigh it and use the calculator with the right purity: buyers pay on the pure silver content, minus their margin.
Italian silver coins
The 500 lire "Caravelle", struck for circulation from 1958 to 1967, weighs 11 g of 835 silver and contains about 9.19 g of pure silver. For investment, Italian dealers mainly sell the Vienna Philharmonic, Maple Leaf and Britannia and bars of up to 1 kg.
