How the numbers are calculated
Spot price and daily change
The headline price is the midpoint of the live bid and ask for one troy ounce (31.1034768 g) of pure silver in US dollars. The daily change is measured against the previous New York 5:00 pm close, the market's standard daily cut-off. Silver trades from Sunday 6:00 pm to Friday 5:00 pm New York time; at weekends the site shows Friday's closing price.
Per gram, kilo, purity and local units
Price per gram = price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768; per kilo = per gram × 1,000 (32.1507 troy ounces). Fine silver (999 and 999.9) is valued as pure silver. Lower grades multiply by their silver content: Britannia 95.8%, sterling 92.5%, coin silver 90%, 835 silver 83.5%, 800 silver 80%, and the UK's 1920–46 coinage 50%. Coin values use each coin's official silver content. Local units use their standard weights: tola 11.6638 g, Hong Kong tael 37.429 g, Japanese monme 3.75 g. These are metal values — what the silver content is worth before premiums, dealer margins, fabrication and taxes.
Country prices
Local prices are spot silver × the current exchange rate. Where a structural import duty means local market prices sit clearly above that, the page shows that estimate separately and labels it. VAT and GST on silver vary a lot — unlike investment gold, silver bullion is generally taxed in the UK and most of the EU, while the UAE and Saudi Arabia zero-rate 99%+ silver bars — and each country page explains the local rules as last reviewed on the date shown. Rules change, so check with a dealer or tax authority before a large purchase.
Charts, performance and history
Long-term charts, performance figures, seasonality and the history pages use daily closes of COMEX front-month silver futures, which track the spot price closely (futures usually trade slightly above spot). Percentage changes are measured on that same series for consistency. Prices in other currencies multiply each day's close by that day's exchange rate.
"Why silver is moving"
The daily move is split into a US-dollar effect and a silver-specific remainder using the change in the US Dollar Index — the same idea as the Kitco Gold Index — shown next to today's moves in gold and copper, silver's two closest relatives. It is an approximation, labelled "Indicative".
