How silver is priced in Pakistan
In Pakistan silver is quoted in rupees per tola (11.6638 g) and per 10 grams for pure silver — often reported as "24 karat" silver — alongside the international price per ounce. The figures on this page are the international spot price converted at today's USD/PKR rate, before local premiums, dealer spreads, taxes and making charges.
The Sarafa silver rate
The All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association announces daily per-tola and per-10-gram rates for silver alongside gold, and the markets in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad generally follow them with minor local differences. The association rate moves with the international price and the dollar–rupee exchange rate but also reflects local supply and demand, so it can differ from converted spot. Shops quote their own buying and selling prices around it, and jewellery adds making charges.
Sales tax
Pakistan taxes jewellery made of precious metal under a special reduced-rate sales-tax regime rather than at the standard rate. The published formula is framed around the gold content of a piece plus a percentage of making charges, and the rules are revisited in each year's Finance Act, so how a silver item is taxed depends on the current schedule. For a significant purchase, ask for an itemised receipt showing weight, purity, making charges and tax, and confirm current rates with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
Purity and buying tips
There is no mandatory national hallmarking scheme for silver in Pakistan. Bars and coins are normally fine silver (999), while jewellery and silverware are often sterling (925) or lower. Ask the dealer to write the weight and purity on the receipt, check the buy-back price before you buy, and compare the per-tola price with the live figure on this page: the difference is the dealer's premium plus any making charge.
