How zakat on gold and silver works

Zakat is an annual obligation of 2.5% on wealth that has stayed at or above the nisab for one full lunar year (hawl). The nisab comes from the hadith: 20 mithqal of gold and 200 dirhams of silver, which most scholars today put at 85 grams of gold and 595 grams of silver. Many South Asian scholars use 7.5 tola (87.48 g) and 52.5 tola (612.36 g).

Gold and silver by purity

Only the pure metal counts towards its value. A 10 g 22K bangle contains 9.16 g of gold; 10 g of 18K contains 7.5 g. The calculator converts each karat for you and values it at today's price per gram — the metal value, not the shop price.

What to include

Add cash at home and in the bank, savings, gold and silver, the zakatable part of shares and funds, business stock valued at its sale price, and money you expect to be repaid. Subtract debts and bills that are due now. Your home, car, furniture and personal belongings are not zakatable.

Jewellery

The Hanafi school counts all gold and silver jewellery. The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools generally exempt jewellery worn for normal personal use but count jewellery kept as savings. Untick "Include jewellery I wear" and enter how much of your gold is worn to follow that view.

This calculator is a guide to the arithmetic, not a religious ruling. For your own situation, please ask a qualified scholar or your local zakat authority.

Zakat on Gold and Silver: FAQ

What is the nisab for zakat today?

Using today's prices, the gold nisab (85 g) is $11,259 and the silver nisab (595 g) is $1,100 (Oct 22, 2026, 00:22 UTC). The table on this page shows both in other currencies.

How do I calculate zakat on gold?

Work out the pure gold in each item (weight × purity: 22K is 91.6%, 21K is 87.5%, 18K is 75%), multiply by today's gold price per gram, and add it to your other zakatable wealth. If the total is above the nisab, zakat is 2.5% of the total.

Should I use the gold or the silver nisab?

Scholars differ. Many recommend the silver nisab when your wealth is a mix of cash, gold and other assets, because it is lower and so more people pay zakat; others use the gold nisab. If you only own gold, the gold nisab is commonly used. Follow the opinion of a scholar you trust.

Is zakat due on jewellery I wear?

In the Hanafi school, yes: gold and silver jewellery is zakatable whether or not it is worn. The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools generally exempt jewellery for normal personal use. The calculator lets you include or leave out worn jewellery.

Is zakat calculated on the value of 24K gold or on the jewellery price?

On the value of the gold content — weight × purity × today's gold price — not on the shop price, which includes making charges and taxes you could not get back if you sold.

When is zakat due?

Once a full lunar (Hijri) year has passed since your wealth first reached the nisab. Many people choose a fixed date, such as a day in Ramadan, and calculate their wealth on that day each year.

How many grams is 7.5 tola of gold?

7.5 tola is 87.48 grams; 52.5 tola of silver is 612.36 grams. Many scholars in South Asia use these weights for the nisab — the calculator offers them as an option.
