Silver Charts FAQ
Has silver beaten gold and the S&P 500?
It depends on the period. Since Aug 2000, silver has changed +1,069%, gold +1,415% and the S&P 500 price index +415%. Silver moves more than gold in both directions — it has roughly 1.5 to 2 times gold's volatility. The S&P 500 figures exclude dividends; silver pays no income. Use the range buttons on the comparison chart to see any period from one year back to 2000.
What does the gold/silver ratio mean?
It is how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys. A high ratio means silver is cheap relative to gold; a low ratio means it is expensive. Over the past 10 years it has ranged from 44 to 126, averaging 80.8. The full history since 1968 is on the gold/silver ratio history page.
Why does silver often move opposite to the dollar?
Silver is priced in US dollars, so a stronger dollar makes it more expensive in other currencies and tends to weigh on the dollar price, and a weaker dollar tends to lift it. The link is loose and breaks down for long stretches, as the comparison chart shows.
