Buying silver in Chennai
Chennai jewellers display the silver rate per gram each morning alongside the gold rate, and per kilogram for bars. Tamil Nadu buys silver for anklets (kolusu), toe rings, lamps and pooja items.
The prices on this page are India's spot-based rate in INR: there is no separate exchange price for Chennai. Taxes and duties are explained on the silver price in India page.
Why Chennai prices differ from spot
Every Indian city starts from the same international price, converted to rupees and raised by the same 15% import duty and 3% GST. City rates then differ by small amounts because of transport and insurance from the port of entry, how much stock local dealers hold and — since silver bar imports became licensed in May 2026 — how tight supply is. For jewellery and silverware the making charge is usually the largest difference between shops.
Chennai is a port city with an air cargo hub, so its rate is usually close to Mumbai's.
Silver in Tamil Nadu
Salem is known for silver anklets made by local artisans, and silver lamps, plates and idols are common gifts. Most jewellery and silverware is sterling (925) or lower, so check the purity stamp and ask how it is priced.
