How silver is priced in Oman
Silver in Oman is priced in rials per gram for jewellery and per kilo or per bar for bullion. With the rial pegged to the US dollar (OMR 0.3845), Omani silver prices move with the international price. The figures here are spot converted to rials, before VAT, dealer premiums and making charges.
VAT on silver
Silver jewellery, silverware and silver gifts carry Oman's standard 5% VAT on their full price. Under the VAT Executive Regulations, investment silver — like gold and platinum — means metal of at least 99% purity that is tradeable on global bullion markets, and it is zero-rated subject to the conditions in the regulations. Sterling (925) and 800 silver are always taxed at 5%.
Hallmarks and silver standards
The Precious Metals Laboratory of the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology (Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion) tests and stamps precious metals before they can be traded. Approved silver standards are 999, 925 and 800. The laboratory also carries out random checks on shops and workshops.
Omani silver
Silver has a long history in Oman: traditional Bedouin jewellery, khanjar daggers and their sheaths, and boxes were made of silver, and old pieces are sold in Muttrah Souq and Nizwa. Antique and craft pieces are priced on workmanship and age, not weight, so their price bears little relation to the spot value here. For investment, 999 bars carry the lowest premium.
