Silver Allowance for Travellers to Australia
Investment-form silver of at least 99.9% fineness, in bars, wafers or coins tradeable on the international bullion market, is duty- and GST-free on import into Australia. Silver jewellery, proof coins and collectable coins are not "precious metals" for these rules: they count towards the AUD 900 traveller concession (AUD 450 under 18), and above it duty and GST apply. Bullion needs no AUSTRAC report, but legal-tender silver coins worth more than AUD 10,000 in total can be the subject of a direction to report.

| Under 18 | AUD 450 of general goods | Same rule. |

Investment silver is duty- and GST-free
The Australian Border Force treats silver of at least 99.9% fineness in investment form, tradeable on the international bullion market, as a precious metal: bars, wafers and coins in the form and character of the metal only are duty- and GST-free. Gold needs 99.5%.
Proof coins, collectable coins and jewellery are not precious metals for these rules. Collectable coins over AUD 1,000 are assessed for GST, and a jewellery consignment over AUD 1,000 for GST and duty.
AUSTRAC and silver coins
An AUSTRAC declaration is not required for bullion. A direction to report can apply where a consignment consists of legal-tender precious metal coins worth more than AUD 10,000 in total, so carry receipts for large coin purchases.

Do I need to declare silver to AUSTRAC?
Not for bullion. Legal-tender silver coins worth more than AUD 10,000 in total can be subject to a direction to report.
