Silver Allowance for Travellers to Bangladesh

A passenger arriving in Bangladesh can bring 200 g of silver ornaments duty-free per calendar year, however many trips they make, under the baggage rules as amended in July 2025. No more than 12 pieces of one type of ornament are allowed. Silver bars have no duty-free amount and pay the duty customs assess. The press wording of the 2025 change ("100 grams of gold jewellery or 200 grams of silver ornaments") leaves unclear whether both allowances can be used in the same year, so check with customs.

Reviewed October 2026 from official sources (listed below). Rules change — check with customs before you travel.

The 200 g silver allowance

Bangladesh gives silver its own allowance: 200 g of silver ornaments per calendar year, compared with 100 g of gold jewellery. Since S.R.O. 312 (in force 2 July 2025) the allowance is counted per calendar year, not per trip. Bangladesh Customs' summary of the rules adds that no more than 12 pieces of one type of ornament are allowed.

The 2025 press release says passengers may bring "100 grams of gold jewelry or 200 grams of silver ornaments". It is not clear whether that means one or the other, so ask customs if you carry both.

Silver bars and other silver

Silver bars are allowed on payment of duty, with no duty-free amount. There is no fixed per-tola duty for silver like the Tk 5,000 per tola charged on a gold bar; customs assess the duty. Large or commercial quantities can be detained or confiscated.
