Travelling with Silver to and from Turkey
Turkey treats silver like gold: travellers may bring in and take out their own non-commercial jewellery of gold, silver, platinum or precious stones worth up to USD 15,000 in total without declaring it, and jewellery worth more may leave only if it was declared on arrival or bought in Turkey. Decision No. 32 limits imports of unprocessed precious metal, which by definition includes silver, to the Central Bank and licensed intermediaries; published guidance discusses this for gold, so check before carrying silver bars. Silver bullion is VAT-exempt, and on silver jewellery the 20% VAT applies only to the price above the silver value. These are the rules as of October 2026; check with Turkish customs before you travel.

Silver follows the gold rules
Decision No. 32 on protecting the value of the Turkish lira defines precious metals as gold, silver, platinum and palladium. Under Article 7, a traveller may bring in and take out their own non-commercial jewellery of precious metals or stones worth up to USD 15,000 in total with no declaration; above that, it may leave only if it was declared on arrival or you can show it was bought in Turkey. Only the Central Bank and licensed precious-metal intermediaries may import unprocessed precious metal. Taking precious metals out without authorisation is fined half to twice their market value (Law No. 1567, amended July 2025).
Silver bullion is exempt from VAT; on silver jewellery the 20% VAT is charged only on the price minus the silver value. Unlike gold jewellery, silver jewellery is not on the list of goods that carry Turkey's extra 20% customs duty. New goods are duty-free up to EUR 430 per passenger.
